Want to Store Pu'er Tea Well? You Must Do This!

Tea News · May 26, 2026

Pu'er tea cake several storage methods

1. Raw cakes and ripe cakes should be stored separately; loose tea follows the same rule as raw and ripe processing methods, with different storage approaches.

2. The storage location should be well-ventilated, allowing the tea to naturally contact the air and age through humidity and temperature.

3. Avoid direct sunlight or exposure to sunlight in the storage space. This is a key point. Light has a strong destructive effect on finished tea, so be careful!

4. If tea cakes are packed in a seven-cake bundle, do not wrap an additional plastic bag outside. The original bamboo leaves are the tea's guardian. Loose tea or opened cakes should be placed in a tea jar.

5. The material of the tea jar should be either porcelain or pottery. For Pu'er tea cake storage, use porcelain jars for raw cakes; ripe cakes with sour notes should not be stored in this type of container, and should be placed in pottery jars instead. Pottery jars are further divided into glazed and unglazed types: glazed jars retain moisture better and have moderate activity, suitable for aged tea. Unglazed pottery jars have better aging properties for tea and are suitable for new tea.
