Tea News · Jun 05, 2026

In recent years, Pu'er tea has gained recognition and attention from more and more people, becoming a daily beverage for improving physical health and wellness. However, for beginners who are new to drinking Pu'er, figuring out how to break the compressed tea into small pieces before brewing can be quite a challenge.

Now, let's teach you how to easily pry open Pu'er tea!

 1. Insert the tea knife from the side edge of the tea cake

2. Apply a little force to push the tea knife further into the cake, so the cake won't break into too many small pieces.

3. Pry upward to break off a piece of the tea cake.

4. Now use the same method, following the gaps between the tea leaves, to pry layer by layer.

5. In this way, the tea cake can be gradually pried apart.

Next, let's take a 100g Pu'er mini ripe tuo cha as an example:

Because this mini tuo cha is pressed very tightly and is quite small, we have chosen to use a tea cone.

1. Insert the tea cone firmly along the inner edge of the tuo cha's concave cavity.

2. Slowly pry along the inner edge of the tuo cha, or alternatively pry along the outer edge.

3. The pried apart mini tuo cha.

Next, let's take a 250g Pu'er ripe tea brick as an example: We have chosen a metal tea knife.

1. Insert the tea knife along the edge of the tea brick.

2. Push the tea knife into the brick with a little force.

3. Apply gentle force to separate the surface layer of the tea brick using the tea knife.

During the process of prying tea, try as much as possible to follow the gaps between the tea leaves and the direction of the tea strands. This way, the tea can be pried more intact, and it won't easily break into too many small pieces...
