What are the differences between Xiaozhong, Dianhong, and Qihong, the three major black teas?

Tea News · May 30, 2025

Compared to Pu'er tea, black tea has a less varied taste, making it a good choice for beginners. Among the prominent black teas, Xiaozhong, Dianhong, and Qihong stand out.

Xiaozhong is the sweetest and most aromatic, with a thick texture. It is a great entry-level choice. Cheaper varieties may have a stronger but mixed taste, while pricier ones are smoother and more mellow. Beginners might prefer the straightforward sweetness of cheaper Xiaozhong.

Dianhong is not as sweet as Xiaozhong but is rich and mellow, with a natural hint of acidity. High-quality Dianhong has a distinctive honey-like fragrance and a deep orange-red color, making it highly appealing.

Qihong is known for its balanced taste and subtle 'Qimen fragrance,' a light floral and fruity aroma that lingers. It may seem plain at first but reveals its depth upon closer tasting. It is best enjoyed plain, without sugar or milk.
