Don’t Be Greedy

When drinking tea, avoid using too many tea leaves. The total amount of tea consumed daily should be controlled. Many people experience "tea drunkenness" due to overly strong or excessive tea consumption. For example, those who rarely drink tea may feel intoxicated after just a little. Beginners should use fewer tea leaves, while regular drinkers should not exceed 15 grams of dry tea per day, adjusting based on the tea’s tenderness.

 


 

Be Patient

Many people rush to drink tea immediately after brewing to capture its aroma. However, scalding-hot tea, while fragrant, can burn the oral mucosa, throat, and esophagus. Repeated burns may lead to cellular mutations and increase cancer risks. Therefore, patience is key when drinking warm tea.

 


 

Choose Wisely

Tea comes in many varieties, and different people should select teas based on their properties. Experts suggest that black tea and Pu-erh tea are warm and gentler on the stomach, making them suitable for those with digestive sensitivities. Green tea and oolong tea are cooler in nature, ideal for those with strong vitality or internal heat. "Tea drunkenness" can occur when switching from highly fermented teas (e.g., black tea, aged tea) to lightly or unfermented teas (e.g., green tea), as the latter contain higher levels of theophylline, which can cause intoxication if consumed excessively.

 


 

Time It Right

Timing matters when drinking tea. Avoid tea before meals, after meals, or before bed. Drinking tea before meals can dilute stomach acid, irritate the intestines, and hinder digestion. On an empty stomach, excessive tea may lead to tea drunkenness. Post-meal tea can interfere with nutrient absorption, such as iron, due to interactions between tea polyphenols and food components. Lastly, avoid tea before sleep to prevent disruptions.
