Tea can lose its original flavor if stored improperly, especially its delicate fragrance. So, how should tea be stored to retain its original taste? Today, we’ll share four tips for preserving tea:
Avoid Moisture
When tea's moisture content reaches 8.8%, it may develop mold; at 12%, mold can grow rapidly under suitable temperatures, leading to visible spots. Therefore, avoid storing tea in humid places like kitchens.
Keep Cool and Dark
Sunlight and artificial light can degrade tea quality. High-grade green tea and floral teas are particularly sensitive to light. Avoid placing tea near windows or under bright lights.
Store Separately
After wrapping tea in paper, seal it in two layers of polyethylene food bags and store it in a dry place. Never store tea near strong-smelling items like mothballs, soap, perfume, or cigarettes.
Use Tin or Ceramic Containers
Tin or ceramic containers are ideal for tea storage, followed by iron, wooden, or bamboo boxes. Plastic bags or cardboard boxes can also be used. If using an iron box, keep it in a cool, shaded area to prevent rust and slow tea deterioration. For plastic bags, choose thick, food-grade options.
