How to Store Tea to Retain Its Fragrance?

Tea News · Jul 07, 2025

Tea can easily lose its fragrance if stored improperly. If you have a habit of drinking tea, it's best to buy it fresh and consume it promptly. For tea stored at home, there are four key points to note.

► Avoid Moisture

When the moisture content of tea reaches 8.8%, it may develop mold; at 12%, if the temperature is suitable, mold can grow rapidly, leading to visible spots. Therefore, do not store tea in humid environments like kitchens.

► Keep Cool and Away from Light

Sunlight and artificial light can affect the quality of tea. High-quality green tea and floral teas are particularly sensitive to light. Avoid placing tea near windows or under direct light.

► Store Separately

After purchasing tea, wrap it in paper and then seal it in two layers of polyethylene food bags before storing it in a dry place. Never store tea near items with strong odors, such as mothballs, soap, perfume, or cigarettes.

► Use Tin or Ceramic Containers

The best containers for storing tea are tin or ceramic jars, followed by iron, wooden, or bamboo boxes. Plastic bags or cardboard boxes can also be used. Iron boxes should be kept in a cool place away from sunlight to prevent rusting and slow down tea deterioration. Thick food-grade plastic bags are another option.
