Life is Like Savoring a Cup of Strong Tea

Tea News · Jul 09, 2025

In leisure, I brewed a cup of fresh tea. In the transparent glass, green leaves floated in clear water, crisp and refreshing, like washed jade. As the mist rose lightly, the delicate aroma of tea spread, faint yet pervasive. If you try to catch it deliberately, it vanishes without a trace; but when you least expect it, its fragrance soothes the soul.

Watching the tender green leaves slowly sink and unfurl in the cup, the swirling steam resembles the hazy morning rain of Jiangnan. Through this misty vapor, a faint ink-wash painting seems to emerge: "The water shimmers in sunlight, the mountains are ethereal in rain; comparing West Lake to Lady Xizi, she is charming whether lightly or heavily adorned."

Tea comes in many varieties, including black tea, green tea, yellow tea, white tea, dark tea, and oolong tea, among nine major types. Each category encompasses numerous subtypes, such as Biluochun, Longjing, Maofeng, Tieguanyin, Yunwu, and Qihong, the ten famous teas. Classified by shape, tea takes on countless forms—flower-like, spear-like, needle-like, flat, spiral—forming a kingdom of aesthetic diversity that rivals the complexity of life itself.

Though small, tea leaves undergo a intricate process: blooming under sunlight, nurtured by drizzle, growing amidst mist, and roasted over slow fire. Only after these trials do they become tea ready for brewing. Then, based on each tea's characteristics, the right teaware and water temperature are chosen. The brewing process is also an art—typically, only seven-tenths of the cup is filled, allowing the leaves to rise and fall freely. A subtle fragrance gradually escapes, and as the boiling water churns the leaves, they eventually settle, completing the perfect cup.

Close your eyes and take a sip, savoring it thoughtfully... Suddenly, it dawns: life is like a tea leaf. Only through trials and tribulations can one truly grasp its essence. In these ups and downs, life gains brilliance and fragrance. Thus, each stage of life can be likened to a different tea.

Youth, the early teens when personality first emerges, is tinged with the first taste of sorrow amid joy. The growing years bring slight烦恼, a懵懂青涩. It resembles a cup of lemon tea—tangy, sweet, and fragrant.

The twenties, a fiery and passionate phase of life, are marked by纯真 and凉意, like Yuhua tea. It embodies the beauty of flowers, the freshness after rain, and a rich aroma that delights the senses—yet carries the inherent bitterness of tea.

By the thirties, career and family take shape, and one learns to strive and create. This stage is like Biluochun tea—clear and emerald, inviting you to admire its aroma, color, and taste. Its slender, spiral leaves, covered in fine hairs, exude elegance and醇厚, offering a light,柔美 sensation. Just as in life's golden years, one tastes the清苦 of tea, a process of refining away浮躁 while preserving fragrance.

At forty, life resembles Longjing tea. Having weathered many trials, this成熟 age shoulders the burdens of supporting elders and raising children. Labor reveals perfection; maturity showcases resilience;言行 exudes nobility. Longjing’s flat, smooth leaves, with their甘鲜醇和 flavor and幽雅清高 aroma, mirror this phase—simple yet dignified, like jade radiating quiet brilliance.

Fifty is akin to oolong tea, blending green and black tea traits. It boasts both浓郁 and清香, with "green leaves rimmed in red." Brewed in small工夫 teapots, its natural orchid fragrance lingers, leaving a sweet aftertaste. By this age, one has experienced much,无需过分显露;真情 flows naturally. Life enters a淡泊 stage, tempering time as time tempers the self. Some truths become clear, and memories沉淀 like tea leaves, cherished in one’s own way. The rich tea becomes a masterpiece in the heart.

Beyond sixty, life is like silver needle white tea or Shou眉 tea, gathering the richness of all teas. Having weathered storms and absorbed nature’s essence, its flavor is profound.无需展示, a drop reveals its风华, as humanity merges with the cosmos. Age, perhaps the least炫耀的资本, is what lets us savor this韵. Even the deepest pains, purified by time, leave only淡然—happiness fades, sorrow fades, and平淡 becomes life’s truth. With wisdom and calm, one watches flowers bloom and wane, and the moon wax and wane.

San Mao once said, "Life is like tea: the first sip is bitter as life, the second sweet as love, the third light as a breeze." Tasting tea is tasting life. Careers are like tea—bitter, astringent, yet sweet after hardship; friendships,浓时太苦,淡时悠悠, linger on the palate; love, with its相思 and缠绵, is like a fresh brew—vibrant and aromatic. Marriage, however, is工夫茶: bitter,涩,凉,甜—how to describe its depths?

Brewing requires timing—too long, and tea turns bitter; too short, it’s bland. Mastery comes with experience, much like seizing opportunities in life. Preparation—understanding and honing—is key. Too early,时机不成熟; too late, it slips away, a balance shaped by阅历.

Fine tea needs quality leaves, spring water, proper heat, and skill to brew. Similarly, a successful life demands道德,才华,人际关系, and the art of navigating society. Inferior leaves yield苦涩; premium ones,香醇.

On life’s journey, immersed in this cup, even bitterness leaves a lingering sweetness.阴晴圆缺 are the moon’s cycles;悲欢离合, life’s twists. Since we cannot refuse life’s苦涩, we persist in our pursuits. Life is like savoring a cup of strong tea—its flavors mirror our experiences.

Life, like tea, can be intense or淡雅. In twilight years, sipping this cup, its清冽香醇 carries a hint of苦, followed by endless sweetness. What more could one ask for? Holding, observing, and tasting it brings恬静, as if life sheds虚荣 and浮躁, reaching transcendence. A sip awaits longing and distant echoes, another voyage, another release of vitality. Thoughts, clear as tea, flow like moonlight, seeping deep into the heart. These seemingly simple leaves hold countless hopes and坎坷.

Brewing another cup, I watch closely. In the bright cup, yellowish-green毛尖 await rebirth, anticipating transformation. Heat surges,沸点 and欢腾 clash, old pains and new wounds surface. In this水深火热 struggle, joy and sorrow merge, releasing all into the water, slowly turning green, a faint fragrance rising. "Witty words bring comfort; tea clears the mind." Facing this serene quiet, the heart grows as clear as the brew.

Tasting tea invites reflection. Indeed, life’s flavors are steeped in tea; to sip is to ponder. Tea is life; life is tea.
