How to Store Pu-erh Tea at Home?

Tea News · Aug 16, 2025

Introduction: Pu-erh tea is a post-fermented tea. For tea lovers, buying the tea is just the first step—proper storage is key. Pu-erh tea improves with age, but this requires an environment suitable for its transformation.

For most households, storing Pu-erh tea can be simplified by focusing on a few key points. Here’s how to store Pu-erh tea at home.

First, avoid direct sunlight, as light can oxidize the tea's pigments and change its color, causing certain substances in the tea to react chemically and produce off-flavors.

Second, prevent moisture. In humid coastal areas, take extra care to avoid dampness, as it can lead to mold and spoilage. During the rainy season, seal the tea in zip-lock or plastic bags.

For small quantities, ceramic jars or purple clay containers are ideal. You can remove the wrapping paper or break the cake into loose pieces for storage.

Pu-erh tea easily absorbs odors, so the storage environment must be completely odor-free. If suitable containers are unavailable, cardboard boxes are a good alternative.

Seal the tea in zip-lock bags and place it in a dry, odor-free cardboard box. It’s best not to remove the bamboo husk packaging for whole bundles. For single cakes, always seal them in zip-lock bags. Store the box in a dark, dry place away from light and moisture.

If using zip-lock bags, replace them every six months. Additionally, store raw and ripe Pu-erh tea separately in different containers to avoid cross-contamination of flavors.
