Shock! Pu'er Tea in France Is Not a Drink but Medicine

Tea News · Oct 05, 2025

Pu'er tea leaves were initially not regarded as a beverage in France, but rather as medicine sold in pharmacies. Pharmacists would add precious ingredients to the tea leaves, such as sugar, ginger, and spices, making it a patent medicine at that time.

Nowadays, many Western European countries sell tuo tea in pharmacies and beauty cosmetics sections of department stores. It has also become a handicraft artwork in home decorations. In France, there is even a saying: "Do you want a beautiful appearance? Then you must drink Pu'er tea."

Firstly, France loves Pu'er:

The French fondness for Pu'er tea is documented in history. After the 23rd year of Guangxu's reign (1897 AD), France and Britain successively established customs in Simao, increasing Pu'er tea exports and sales. The Ancient Tea Horse Road subsequently flourished, and from then on, more French people began drinking Pu'er tea, with exports to France and other European countries increasing year by year.

Secondly, the French recognize Pu'er tea's pharmacological effects:

In the autumn of 1979, Mr. Gampell, a famous French entrepreneur, attended the Guangzhou Trade Fair. Out of his love for Pu'er tea and prospects for its sales in France, Mr. Gampell resolutely signed a long-term agreement with Yunnan authorities for exclusive distribution of Yunnan Pu'er tuo tea in Europe. During an evening reception at Guangzhou's Panxi Restaurant, Old Gan proposed...

In recent years, France has imported Chinese Pu'er tea on a large scale annually, including both ripened and raw tea. France was also the first country to conduct comprehensive research on the health benefits of Pu'er tea, achieving prominent scientific results that lead China in many aspects.

Thirdly, Pu'er tea's clinical effects are remarkable

Research by Dr. Emile Carrobi, Clinical Teaching Director at Paris Saint Antoine Medical School, shows that drinking Yunnan Pu'er tea reduces body weight and decreases levels of lipids, triglycerides, and cholesterol in humans. It also plays a role in reducing blood uric acid levels. Over 40% of cases showed varying degrees of weight loss after consuming Yunnan Pu'er tea, with more significant effects observed in patients aged 40-50. It also variably reduces triglycerides, cholesterol, uric acid, and other components in the human body.

At the 1986 Yunnan Tuo Tea Research Conference in Paris, Professor Jacoto announced that clinical trials at Modeul Hospital in Cretail demonstrated that drinking three bowls of tuo tea daily reduced blood lipids by 22% in 20 patients with high lipid levels after one month, while patients drinking the same amount of other teas showed no changes in blood lipids. Consequently, Mr. Gampell held a conference on Yunnan tuo tea research at Paris' Prince Restaurant in July 1987, inviting medical and nutritional authorities and journalists from major French newspapers, magazines, and overseas Chinese publications to promote the remarkable health effects of Yunnan tuo tea.

Through these experiments and media publicity, the previously unknown tuo tea in international markets has gained recognition. Many people now consume tuo tea as a lipid-lowering and weight-loss medication, use it as gifts for friends and relatives, or sell it in beauty cosmetic counters and health food stores.
