Introduction to Meijiang Cuipian Tea

Tea News · Dec 24, 2025

Meijiang Cuipian Tea, originally named Meijiang Tea, derives its name from its origin along the banks of the Meijiang River. Created in 1943, it boasts a history of over 60 years and is a renowned flat-shaped tea from Guizhou Province. Primarily sold in Guiyang and Zunyi, it also reaches markets in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. It is often used as a gift tea for relatives and friends or to entertain international guests.

Meijiang Cuipian Tea is produced at the Meijiang Tea Plantation in Guizhou Province. The plantation is situated by the Meijiang River, enjoying a mild climate, abundant rainfall, and fertile soil, making it highly suitable for tea tree growth.

Meijiang Cuipian Tea is made from tender shoots of the Meijiang Liangzhong Tai tea variety. Harvesting begins around the Qingming Festival (early April), with the pre-Qingming tea considered the highest quality. The picking standard for Special, Grade 1, and Grade 2 Cuipian is: one bud with one newly unfolded leaf, where the bud is longer than the leaf, and the bud-and-leaf lengths are 1.5 cm, 2 cm, and 2.5 cm respectively. The standard for Grade 3 Cuipian is: one bud with two newly unfolded leaves, with the bud-and-leaf length not exceeding 3 cm. Typically, producing 500 grams of Special Grade Cuipian requires over 50,000 buds. Grade 1 Cuipian requires approximately 40,000 buds. The harvested buds and leaves must be spread out separately by grade in a ventilated, cool place. The spreading thickness is 1-1.2 kg per square meter, with a moisture loss of about 8%. This process generally takes 3-5 hours.

Meijiang Tea is a high-grade shoulder-shaped green tea with a 40-year history. As early as the War of Resistance against Japan, the Xiang Tea Experimental Field of the Central Agricultural Research Institute, located in Meitan, used the Meitan Tai tea population variety as raw material and trial-produced it by imitating Longjing tea techniques. In 1954, the name was officially finalized by combining the name of the Meijiang River with the tea name. The beautiful river and the fragrant tea leaves make it even more captivating. Although Meijiang Tea's processing is similar to Longjing's, the vigorous growth, longer internodes, tender and plump leaves, and sturdy buds of the Meitan bitter tea variety used, along with the careful, even picking and skilled manual processing involving steps like pan-fixing, spreading, secondary frying, re-spreading, and low-temperature drying, give the tea its unique quality. After brewing, the flat, straight tea strips instantly transform into small blossoms, one bud with one leaf, blooming in the cup, releasing a fresh, delicate, and refreshing tea aroma. It is both an elegant art treasure and provides aesthetic enjoyment. Meijiang Tea rivals the top-grade Shifeng Longjing in quality and sells well both within and outside the province.

Meijiang Tea is a fine product among teas, suitable for buying as a gift for relatives and friends.
