Narcissus tea has thick stems, long internodes, broad and fleshy leaves, high moisture content, and slow water loss. Narcissus tea is one of China's fine tea varieties and a gem among Fujian's oolong teas. So, what exactly is narcissus tea? The following provides a detailed introduction.
We know that narcissus tea is a type of oolong tea, originally from northern Fujian. This tea tree existed in the Jianyang and Jian'ou areas over a thousand years ago, but its cultivation began during the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi period (1662-1722). In 1857, Zheng Shibao and his son from Yongchun's Xianxi Township introduced narcissus tea from northern Fujian to Dingxian Rock in Xianxi. It later spread throughout Yongchun and southern Fujian. Yongchun narcissus tea blends the processing techniques of northern and southern Fujian oolong teas, resulting in a more durable brew, enhanced aroma, mellower taste, and brighter liquor, forming the unique 'Minnan Narcissus Tea.' Yongchun thus became the birthplace of 'Minnan Narcissus Tea.'
The Minnan narcissus tea tree is semi-arboreal. It has a distinct trunk, a flattened base, sparse branches, and a tall canopy. The leaves are thick, deep green, and glossy. The buds are robust and covered with fine hairs. Propagation is done through layering or cutting asexual reproduction. It is suitable for making black tea and green tea but excels particularly as oolong tea.
After strict evaluation by tea experts, tea farmer Li Jinfeng from Wuxi Village, Nanyang Township, and Zhang Junlin from Zhongcun Village, Shuangyang Town, won the 'Tea King' title for this year's autumn Zhangping Narcissus Tea competition with their tea cakes and loose tea, respectively, distinguished by their vibrant color, mellow taste, unique craftsmanship, and exceptional quality. Zhangping Narcissus Tea Cake, also known as 'paper-wrapped tea,' is made by processing fresh leaves from narcissus tea trees into oolong tea and then compressing them into cake shapes using wooden molds.
The above is an introduction to what narcissus tea is, hoping it helps everyone understand this tea better.
