Variety Classification of Mei Tea

Tea News · Jan 02, 2026

Mei tea possesses unique quality and health benefits. Its effects are comparable to rhinoceros horn, providing cooling and detoxifying properties, improving eyesight, and reducing internal heat, and it can treat 'severe heat syndrome.' The following introduces the variety classification of Mei tea.

In the past, Mei tea products had numerous and inconsistent names, divided into five varieties: Zhenmei, Zhenmei, Xiumei, Gongxi, and Xiamu. Zhenmei was further divided into Chou Xin and Chou Zhen; Chou Xin included Te Zhen and Zhen Zhen; Zhenmei had primary and secondary grades, with the primary called Te Zhen and the secondary called Pu Zhen; some were not graded and called Tong Zhen; Xiumei also had two types, the coarse called Feng Mei and the fine called Xin Mei; Gongxi was divided into Te Gong and Pu Gong.

In the mid-1980s, the varieties of Mei tea were simplified. They are generally categorized into Te Zhen (special grade, grade 1 to 2), Zhenmei (grade 1 to 5 and ungraded), Yu tea, Gongxi (special tribute grade 1 to 3 and ungraded), Xiumei (special grade, grade 1 to 3), and tea flakes, totaling 19 varieties.

The above is an introduction to the variety classification of Mei tea. Mei tea, English name: Mee, is one of the premium green teas. It features tightly rolled, even strips with a gray-green, frosted appearance, oily luster, high aroma, and rich flavor. It is named for its slender, eyebrow-like strips.
