Tea News · Jan 11, 2026

How long is the shelf life of tea?

The shelf life of tea is related to its quality, and different types of tea have different shelf lives. For example, Yunnan Pu'er tea improves with aging, and its shelf life can be as long as 10-20 years; Wuyi rock tea becomes more aromatic and mellow when stored for a year, so its shelf life is also quite long. However, most teas are better when fresh, such as green tea, which can be stored at room temperature for about a year. Factors affecting tea quality mainly include temperature, light, and humidity. If stored properly, tea can be preserved for longer.

How to tell if tea has expired?

First, check if it has mold or a stale odor. If either of these signs is present, the tea has likely spoiled. Additionally, you can judge by the infusion's color and taste. Expired green tea may turn reddish, with a brownish infusion, and its richness, astringency, and freshness will significantly decline. Of course, you can also check the expiration date on the tea packaging. For loose tea, it's best not to consume it if it has been stored for more than 18 months.

Can you still drink expired tea?

If tea has expired, it may become damp, and mold can grow on it. Therefore, it is best not to drink expired tea. If it's not drinkable, are there other uses for expired tea?

Uses for expired tea

1. Dehumidifier and Deodorizer

Dry tea has strong moisture-absorbing properties. Place some expired tea in a container and put it in areas prone to dampness, such as the refrigerator or drawers. It works well as a dehumidifier and also emits a light tea fragrance, doubling as a deodorizer.

2. Fertilizer

Used tea leaves can promote plant growth, making leaves greener and more vibrant. You can soak expired tea in water first and then pour it into flowerpots as an excellent fertilizer.

3. Ashtray

Spread a layer of expired tea in an ashtray, add a little water, and ash cigarettes in it or extinguish them. This helps contain smoke and odor, preventing them from spreading.
