People with Poor Digestion Can Drink Honey as Tea

Tea News · Feb 09, 2026

In recent popular Korean dramas, characters of all ages frequently say, "Quick, make a cup of honey water!" whenever something happens. Similarly, in our daily lives, some people, especially those with digestive issues or chronic constipation, often enjoy drinking honey water as a substitute for tea. Regarding this, Cai Meiqin, director of the Nutrition Department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, stated: Drinking honey as tea is a great idea!

There are many nutritional products around us, but honey is often overlooked for its health and disease-prevention benefits because it is so easily obtained.

During an interview, Cai Meiqin explained that, in terms of nutritional content, honey contains large amounts of glucose and fructose, which can be directly absorbed and utilized by the body without digestion. Long-term consumption of honey not only nourishes the body and promotes longevity but also benefits certain health conditions.

As for who is suitable for drinking honey, Cai Meiqin mentioned that, aside from diabetic patients who should consume it sparingly and children who should drink it in moderation, everyone else can enjoy it.

Cai Meiqin added that adults can consume about 100 grams of honey daily, divided into multiple servings. If mixing it with water, one spoonful of honey (approximately 5-10 grams) can be diluted into a cup of honey water (about 200-300 grams). It is best to use warm water below 60°C to avoid destroying its nutritional components. Honey is best consumed in the morning, one hour before meals, or two hours after meals. For patients with excessive stomach acid or gastric and duodenal ulcers, drinking honey water 1.5 hours before meals can help inhibit stomach acid secretion, reduce acid levels, and promote ulcer healing.
