Pre-Qingming? Pre-Grain Rain? Which Spring Light Do You Prefer?

Tea News · Feb 25, 2026

In February, mountain homes experience Grain Rain weather, half slopes of fragrant tea gleam with dew. With Qingming Festival imminent, it's time for the year's new tea to hit the market. Many tea lovers ask: which is better, Pre-Qingming tea or Pre-Grain Rain tea? Pre-Qingming tea, two buds; Pre-Grain Rain tea, aroma soaring.

Pre-Qingming tea and Pre-Grain Rain tea are terms used in the Jiangnan tea region along the Yangtze River, referring to spring tea harvested according to solar terms. "Pre-Qingming tea" is picked before Qingming Festival, while "Pre-Grain Rain tea" is harvested after Qingming but before Grain Rain. Some believe Pre-Qingming tea tastes better due to its tenderness and fragrance; others prefer Pre-Grain Rain tea. So, what exactly are the differences between them?

I. Pre-Qingming Tea

Pre-Qingming Tea: Tea leaves picked before Qingming Festival suffer less pest damage, with tender buds and leaves, emerald color, subtle fragrance, mellow taste, and beautiful shape, making it a premium tea. Additionally, due to generally low temperatures before Qingming, bud emergence is limited, growth is slow, and yield meeting picking standards is very low, hence the saying "Pre-Qingming tea is as precious as gold."

Quality Characteristics of Pre-Qingming Tea: Tea culture experts note that in the Jiangnan tea region, after a long winter, tea plants accumulate ample nutrients. Combined with low early-spring temperatures and slow growth, bud quality is excellent at this time. Pre-Qingming tea has relatively higher amino acid content and lower levels of bitter-tasting polyphenols compared to later harvests, resulting in a fragrant and mellow flavor. Moreover, Pre-Qingming tea is less contaminated by pesticides, especially early spring tea, which represents the highest quality green tea of the year. Thus, high-grade teas picked before Qingming are particularly favored by tea enthusiasts.

II. Pre-Grain Rain Tea

Pre-Grain Rain Tea refers to tea made from tender buds and tips harvested after April 5th and around April 20th, before Grain Rain. Although not as tender as Pre-Qingming tea (harvested before Qingming), due to higher temperatures during this period, bud and leaf growth is relatively faster, accumulating richer internal compounds. Thus, Pre-Grain Rain tea often offers a fresh, strong taste that withstands multiple infusions. Ming Dynasty writer Xu Cishu discussed the tea-picking season in "Cha Shu": "Qingming is too early, Start of Summer is too late; the period around Grain Rain is just right." For ordinary roasted green tea in the Jiangsu-Zhejiang region, the time after Qingming and before Grain Rain is indeed the most suitable season for harvesting spring tea. It is said that chronologically, Pre-Qingming tea is the pinnacle of tea, while Pre-Grain Rain tea is a superior grade.

Quality Characteristics of Pre-Grain Rain Tea: During the dry season from October to late May, spring rain typically falls around early April. Tea leaves picked before this rain are called "Pre-Grain Rain tea." Due to climatic factors—"low temperature, scant rainfall"—Pre-Grain Rain tea features thin, short leaves, a pronounced aroma, a slightly bitter taste, and a strong, substantial character.

Pre-Qingming, Pre-Grain Rain—these terms are all about timing. So, what you're drinking is not just tea, but a consumption of springtime itself. In this splendid spring light, indulge in the sensuality of spring tea.
