The Difference Between Pu-erh Tea and Tuo Tea

Tea News · Feb 25, 2026

Pu-erh Tea and Tuo Tea—what is the difference? Pu-erh tea originates from Yunnan Province, China, and has been renowned both historically and globally. Today, areas like Xishuangbanna and Simao in Yunnan still produce Pu-erh tea in abundance. Historical records indicate that during the Tang Dynasty, the Yinsheng Prefecture in southern Yunnan was the main tea-producing region. Since Pu-erh was historically part of Yinsheng Prefecture and teas from southern Yunnan were all gathered and distributed through Pu-erh Prefecture before being transported elsewhere, they became known collectively as Pu-erh tea. Therefore, historically, the term "Pu-erh tea" actually refers collectively to various Yunnan teas produced from sun-dried large-leaf tea raw materials, processed and refined into different forms.

"Tuo Tea"

Tuo tea resembles a round bun from the top and a thick-walled bowl from the bottom, with a concave center, making it quite distinctive. There are different types of Tuo tea based on raw materials: green tea Tuo tea and dark tea (fermented tea) Tuo tea. Green tea Tuo tea is made from finer, sun-dried green tea leaves, steamed and pressed into shape. Dark tea Tuo tea is made from Pu-erh tea raw materials, also steamed and pressed. The variety pressed from sun-dried green tea is called Yunnan Tuo tea, while the variety pressed from loose Pu-erh tea is called Yunnan Pu-erh Tuo tea.

Yunnan Tuo tea, made from first and second-grade Yunnan sun-dried green tea, is steamed and pressed into a bowl shape, 8 cm in diameter and 4.5 cm high. The appearance shows visible tea hairs, and the higher-quality grade is "Special Grade Tuo Tea," which has a rich aroma, mellow and thick taste, a sweet aftertaste, and a bright orange-yellow liquor. Yunnan Pu-erh Tuo tea, pressed from loose Pu-erh tea, has a tight form, reddish-brown color, a unique aged aroma, a mellow and sweet taste, and a bright, deep red liquor.
