Differences Between Lotus-Fragrance Fuzhuan Tea and Traditional Fuzhuan Tea

Tea News · Feb 28, 2026

Anhua Fuzhuan Tea, the nemesis of lifestyle diseases, has been the essential drink for borderland herders for centuries and the mysterious tea of the ancient Silk Road. It is rich in nutrients such as vitamins B1, B2, C, sodium, potassium, iron, copper, phosphorus, fluorine, protein, amino acids, carbohydrates, and phospholipids, serving as a crucial nutritional source for ethnic minorities with limited access to fruits and vegetables. Lotus-Fragrance Fuzhuan Tea ingeniously blends Anhua Dark Tea with lotus leaves, where the fragrances of lotus, tea, and beneficial fungi interweave into a wonderfully aromatic profile. With its清爽醇厚 (refreshing and mellow) taste, unique功效 (effects), and rich nutrition, it is considered a top-grade Fuzhuan tea.

Anhua Dark Tea was listed as a tribute tea during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. The imperial family and nobility discovered that drinking Anhua Dark Tea after rich, greasy meals made them feel very comfortable. The palace concubines also found that brewing dark tea with a bit of lotus leaf had effects of cutting grease and clearing internal heat.

Lotus-Fragrance Fuzhuan Tea has relatively broken leaves, contains stems, and uses older raw material. Do not be surprised—these are the characteristics of Anhua Fuzhuan tea:古朴 (simple and rustic),原始 (primitive),另类 (unconventional),与众不同 (distinctive).

Broken leaves: During processing, Fuzhuan tea undergoes a "cutting" step where the dark coarse tea is cut into pieces to facilitate pressing into shape and to encourage the formation of the "Golden Flower."

Containing stems: An appropriate amount of tea stems allows the brick to have moderate compactness, which is conducive to the formation of the "Golden Flower" (Eurotium cristatum). Meanwhile, tea stems contain丰富的香气物质 (abundant aromatic compounds) and can be brewed and enjoyed together.

Older raw material: Dark coarse tea made from overly tender leaves is not suitable for producing Fuzhuan tea.

The "Golden Flower," scientifically named Eurotium cristatum, is a probiotic fungus群 (community). Similar to the lactic acid bacteria in yogurt, it is very beneficial for health. Scientific studies have confirmed that the Golden Flower has excellent health effects for groups with high blood lipids, blood sugar, blood pressure, or fatty liver.

Japanese medical and health experts researching Anhua Fuzhuan Tea have extracted the "Golden Flower" from Fuzhuan tea and developed it into health products, priced higher than gold, leading to the saying "黄金铂金不如黑金" (Gold and platinum are not as good as 'black gold').

The size of the Golden Flower颗粒 (granules) changes during aging. When flourishing, they resemble "米兰" (Milan flowers), but they may shrink, becoming smaller or even turning into tiny white spots, which does not affect the quality or功效 (efficacy).
