Differences Between Pu'er Tea and Black Tea

Tea News · Apr 28, 2026

Because Pu'er tea has a brownish-red and bright liquor, while black tea has a bright red liquor, the two are sometimes confused by those not familiar with tea, leading people to mistakenly call Pu'er tea black tea. In fact, Pu'er tea and black tea are two different categories of tea products with essential differences.

I. Different Categories

Pu'er tea belongs to the reprocessed tea category, while black tea belongs to the basic tea category. The basic tea categories include green tea, black tea, oolong tea, yellow tea, white tea, and dark tea. Black tea is one of them. Pu'er tea, on the other hand, is made from sun-dried green tea (a type of green tea) through a special processing method.

II. Different Taste and Aroma

Pu'er tea has a mellow taste and a unique aged aroma; black tea has a sweet, mellow, and refreshing taste with a rich sweet fragrance. One has an aged aroma, the other a sweet aroma—making them relatively easy to distinguish.

III. Different Processing Methods

Taking Pu'er loose tea and Gongfu black tea as examples: The processing of Pu'er loose tea involves: Yunnan large-leaf sun-dried green tea → pile fermentation (fermentation) → drying → sieving → sorting → blending into final product. The processing of Gongfu black tea involves: fresh tea leaves → withering → rolling → fermentation → shaping → drying → raw black tea → refining → baking → finished product.

Among these, Yunnan large-leaf sun-dried green tea belongs to the green tea category, with the processing method: fresh Yunnan large-leaf tea leaves → fixing → rolling → sun-drying.

IV. Different Product Appearances

Pu'er tea products include Pu'er loose tea and Pu'er compressed tea. Pu'er loose tea has thick, tight, and heavy strips with a brownish or reddish-brown color. Pu'er compressed tea is made by steaming and pressing Pu'er loose tea, with main shapes including cakes, bricks, and bowls.

Black tea products mainly include Gongfu black tea and broken black tea. Gongfu black tea is primarily in strip form, with some curled shapes, having a glossy black color and prominent golden tips. Broken black tea appears as small granular pieces with a glossy black color and can be further processed into tea bags.

Additionally, Pu'er tea is a unique geographical indication product of Yunnan, and its processing must use Yunnan large-leaf sun-dried green tea as raw material. In contrast, black tea can be made from either large-leaf or medium/small-leaf varieties. For example, "Dianhong" is made from large-leaf tea leaves, while "Qimen Hongcha" (Keemun) is made from small-leaf tea leaves.
