The Most Complete White Tea Brewing Methods (with Pros and Cons Analysis)

Tea News · May 02, 2026

Generally speaking, white tea has six brewing methods, which can be categorized as: one cup, two gaiwan, three small pot, four large pot, five infuser cup, six boiling.

① The so-called one cup refers to the cup brewing method

Take about 5 grams of white tea, put it into a glass cup or thermos, directly pour boiling water at around 90 degrees Celsius, and it can be drunk after one minute.

Advantages: This brewing method is the simplest and most free, suitable for home, travel, and office. No need for many tea sets, just a kettle to boil water and a glass cup or thermos, and you can enjoy it yourself.

Disadvantages: It is more suitable for drinking alone, not ideal for entertaining guests, and lacks some cultural atmosphere and feeling.

② The so-called two gaiwan refers to the gaiwan brewing method

Prepare a full set of tea utensils, take 5-8 grams of white tea into a gaiwan, slowly brew with water at around 90 degrees Celsius, and share using a fairness cup.

Advantages: This is the most commonly used brewing method, very suitable for home and office. Whether two, three, or even six or seven people, sitting around, sipping and chatting, it is relaxed and enjoyable. The key point is that the tea brewed with this method is often more fragrant than the cup brewing method.

Disadvantages: It is a bit troublesome during travel, which is a minor drawback, but it can be solved by using travel tea sets, which are also easy to carry. Another disadvantage is that it tests your skill: if you pour out too quickly, the flavor is weak; if too slowly, it becomes slightly bitter. It needs to be just right. As the saying goes: What I brew is not tea, but skill.

③ The so-called three small pot is not about a third person, but the small pot brewing method

Use a medium-sized, large-bellied purple clay pot, put in 7-10 grams of white tea, steep with boiling water at around 90 degrees Celsius for a few tens of seconds, then pour out and slowly enjoy.

Advantages: The tea soup is fresh and mellow, offering both taste and elegance.

Disadvantages: This is a niche brewing method because good purple clay pots are hard to buy and more expensive than ordinary tea sets. It is considered a method for the wealthy or refined.

④ The so-called four large pot refers to the large pot brewing method

Use a large-bellied, tall large porcelain pot, put in 10-15 grams of white tea, and steep with boiling water at 90-100 degrees Celsius.

Advantages: This is a very home-style brewing method, both traditional and fashionable. You can repeatedly add water and drink from morning to night, with a particularly mellow and refreshing flavor.

Disadvantages: Not suitable for travel or general office use.

⑤ The so-called five infuser cup refers to the infuser cup brewing method

Take 5-8 grams of white tea into an infuser cup, and brew with boiling water at around 90 degrees Celsius.

Advantages: It is a partial combination of the cup brewing method and the gaiwan method, relatively simple.

Disadvantages: As it combines the advantages of both, it naturally also highlights their disadvantages. The most obvious is the lack of cultural feeling associated with ceramic tea sets, and the tea aroma is somewhat inferior to the gaiwan method.

⑥ The so-called six boiling method refers to the boiling method

Take about 15 grams of aged white tea (over three years old), put it into a boiling vessel, add room temperature water to 80% full, boil on high heat for about three minutes, filter out the tea liquid, or switch to low heat for slow boiling.

Besides the above six brewing methods, there are actually many other good methods that most people may not know about. The editor briefly mentions two: the thermos brewing method and the cold brewing method.

⑦ The so-called thermos brewing method involves steeping in a thermos

Take 10-15 grams of aged Fuding white tea (over five years old), put it into a thermos, fill with boiling water to the brim, cork it, let it steep for 8 hours, then pour out and drink. It can be left overnight.

Advantages: The taste is mellow, and it is said to be particularly effective in lowering blood pressure. For those with stubborn hypertension, drinking it for two to three weeks using this method can generally bring blood pressure down.

Disadvantages: Note that only Fuding aged white tea over five years old works, and it is not easy to buy.

⑧ The so-called cold brewing method involves directly brewing with cold water

Take a bottle of mineral water, insert about 2-3 grams of white tea, close the lid, shake well, and let it steep for 2 hours before drinking.

Advantages: A great option for car rides and travel.

Disadvantages: The steeping time is long, requiring over 2 hours.
