First Infusion, Will You Drink It or Not?

Tea News · May 31, 2026

This is perhaps one of the most common phenomena in the tea circle: many tea enthusiasts, when brewing tea, pour the first infusion and discard it with a "whoosh." This action has almost become a habit. Many tea lovers do this, and to make a rough arithmetic equation, the first infusions discarded by Chinese people would collectively fill a West Lake!

Tea varies, and so do the methods of drinking it. They need to be discussed separately.

Claim 1: The first infusion doesn't taste good anyway, so discarding it doesn't matter.

This statement mainly refers to the warming and moistening aspect of the first infusion, believing that the "warming rinse" has not reached the optimal drinking taste, so discarding it is fine. However, for some lightly fermented teas, the beneficial substances are most fully released in the first infusion.

Claim 2: The first infusion is used to wash away impurities and dust.

This claim applies to teas that have been aged for some time, such as the beloved Pu'er tea. The first infusion can indeed serve as a rinse, so it doesn't need to be drunk. Don't feel it's a waste. Pu'er tea is unique: the first two or three infusions are for waking the tea, the fourth and fifth enter its prime, and after more than ten infusions, it gradually fades.

Endless tea meanings, unfathomable life.
