Drink Tibetan Tea to Sober Up and Resolve Fatty Liver

Tea News · Jun 04, 2026

Alcoholic liver disease, also known as fatty liver, is caused by the accumulation of fat in the spaces between liver cells. Currently, medicine has only discovered that fat deposition compresses liver cells, narrowing their environment and affecting their function. In fact, it is not only heavy drinkers who suffer from fatty liver; modern lifestyles and excessive nutrition can also lead to fat deposition in the liver. Traditional Chinese medicine describes this phenomenon as "Qi stagnation" or further "blood stasis." Any obstruction can lead to pathological reactions, and because the liver area has low neurological sensitivity, symptoms often appear only after fatty liver has formed to some extent.

The human body processes all alcohol in the liver. The fiber, polysaccharides, pigments, and decomposing enzymes in Tibetan tea can accelerate the liver's tricarboxylic acid cycle, shortening the time alcohol stays in the liver, thus protecting the liver and promoting alcohol breakdown. If conditions permit, drinking Tianlu (a type of high-quality Tibetan tea) may have a faster effect. Fortunately, patients with fatty liver who drink Tibetan tea for a period of time have seen varying degrees of reduction or disappearance of fatty liver. Drinking high-fiber Tibetan teas such as Jinjian, Kangzhuan, or aged Tibetan tea is effective for fatty liver, while aged Tibetan tea or Tianlu has a more pronounced effect on sobering up. Consume around 10g per brew and drink promptly.

Method: If you already have fatty liver, it is best to drink 30–40g of Tibetan tea daily, and pay attention to eating less animal organs and drinking less alcohol. There is a herb called "Ganhuangcao" in Gulin County, Sichuan, which helps detoxify and relieve stagnation with very few side effects. It can be boiled together with Tibetan tea for regular consumption. If conditions allow, taking 10g of Ganoderma lucidum spore powder daily with Tibetan tea is also an effective method to eliminate fatty liver.
