Things You Must Know About Pu'er Tea!

Tea News · Jun 09, 2026

1. Ancient trees are not necessarily large; frequently picked ancient trees can become very small.

2. Aged Pu'er tea can be very valuable, but it may not come from large trees.

3. Larger trunk diameter does not necessarily mean older tree age; different tea tree varieties with the same age can have different trunk diameters.

4. Abundant leaf fuzz does not necessarily indicate an ancient tree, but the more fuzz, the better it resists insect bites.

5. Pu'er tea trees have white lichen; but not every tree with white lichen is a Pu'er tea tree.

6. Sun-drying is a skilled technique, not simply placing tea leaves under the sun.

7. Pu'er tea does not become more valuable with age alone; garbage from 100 years ago is still garbage today.

8. Raw Pu'er tea will never become ripe tea no matter how long it is stored; ripeness is a process, not a matter of time.

9. Store Pu'er tea 15 cm above the ground; elevate higher in humid conditions.

10. We mistakenly confuse aflatoxin with Aspergillus flavus; the latter is toxic but cannot survive in Pu'er tea. Only contaminated Pu'er tea produces aflatoxin, e.g., tea placed on the ground or stored with grains.

11. Tea is not the only plant containing alkaloids; most plants contain alkaloids in varying amounts.

12. Drinking tea after meals does not affect nutrient absorption for meat-eaters, but slightly affects vegetarians; for example, calcium and iron in nuts exist in ionic form and can be broken down by tea's folic acid, hindering absorption.
