Tea Understands You, But Do You Understand Tea?

Tea News · Jun 13, 2026

Although China can be called the “tea country”, through frequent exchanges and interviews with friends, it is shown that people still have two major misunderstandings about drinking tea.

First, the more expensive the tea, the better

“Nowadays, more and more high-priced teas not only satisfy people's pursuit of taste but also serve as a symbol of status.” Famous Chinese tea scholar Zhao Yingli said: The price of tea is determined by quality and grade. Quality mainly refers to the origin and tree species of the tea, for example, everyone knows that West Lake Longjing is good; grade is mainly related to the picking time and picking parts, such as tender buds, one bud one leaf, one bud two leaves, the prices vary considerably. Similarly, for Longjing, the Mingqian tea picked before Qingming Festival is expensive.

Wang Qing, executive vice president of the China Tea Circulation Association, believes: “Ordinary people actually don't need to buy such high-end tea; they can completely choose according to their personal financial ability and different tastes.”

Second, only drink tea without savoring it

There are two kinds of tea: one is the tea of “firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea”, and the other is the tea of “zither, chess, calligraphy, painting, poetry, wine, and tea”.

The first kind of tea can satisfy people's need for “nourishing the body”, such as quenching thirst, refreshing, removing heat, and aiding digestion; the second kind of tea can satisfy people's need for “nourishing the heart”, such as expressing emotions, etiquette, and enlightenment.

Famous Chinese tea scholar Zhao Yingli said that the greatest value of tea for people is to nourish the heart as the main focus, supplemented by nourishing the body. “Especially for middle-aged people who are busy with work and under great pressure, they should give themselves some time to patiently brew a pot of tea and savor it. When people are irritable, they are very likely to make wrong decisions. At this time, it is better to slowly savor a pot of tea before making a decision.”

How to Drink the Right Tea?

 1. Drink tea according to your body constitution

If you want to maintain health by drinking tea, you must understand tea. Han Chi, a researcher at the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said: “Each type of tea has different properties, and you must choose the tea that suits you.

For example, everyone says that green tea has good antioxidant effects, but people with a cold constitution will feel uncomfortable if they drink it.” Jiang Heyuan, associate researcher at the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said, “Drinking tea also pays attention to the right time and place. Many people drink the same kind of tea all year round, which is also wrong. In winter, it is cold, so you can drink more warm-natured tea; in spring and summer, it is easy to get上火, so you can drink more green tea and flower tea.”

 2. Drink tea according to the type of tea

Zhao Yingli explained that Chinese tea is divided into six major categories: green tea, black tea, yellow tea, white tea, oolong tea, and dark tea. The six major types of tea have different natures and different effects on the human body.

  For example:

Green tea is cold in nature, suitable for people with a hot constitution, strong stomach fire, and abundant energy. Green tea has good anti-radiation effects and is very suitable for people who often work in front of computers.

White tea is cool in nature, and the applicable人群 are similar to green tea, but “aged green tea is grass, while aged white tea is treasure.” Aged white tea (such as Baihao Yinzhen, Bai牡丹, Shoumei, Gongmei, etc.) has the effect of dispelling evil and supporting righteousness.

Yellow tea is cold in nature, and its effects are roughly similar to green tea. The difference lies in the taste: green tea is refreshing, while yellow tea is mellow.

Oolong tea is neutral in nature, suitable for a wide range of people.

Black tea is warm in nature, suitable for people with cold stomachs, cold hands and feet, weak constitution, and older people. It tastes better with milk or honey.

Dark tea (such as Pu'er tea) is warm in nature, can remove grease, detoxify meat, and lower blood lipids. It is best to store it properly before drinking for better taste and效果.

  3. Drink tea according to the season

Drink flower tea and Dancong in spring:

Spring focuses on疏通 liver qi, and aromatic substances have the effect of opening the orifices, so you can drink more Phoenix Dancong and jasmine tea. However, fresh green tea in spring still has too much coldness, so it should not be drunk too much, especially for people with a cold constitution.

Drink green tea and Tieguanyin in summer:

The first choice for relieving heat and quenching thirst in summer is green tea. In addition, Tieguanyin and Taiwan high-mountain tea are also good choices. People with good constitutions can also drink some raw Pu'er that has been stored for 3-5 years.

Oolong tea is suitable in autumn:

Autumn is suitable for drinking oolong tea. The nature and taste of oolong tea are between green tea and black tea, neither cold nor warm. It can not only clear the remaining heat in the body but also generate fluids and nourish yin. The best choices for autumn are the spring Tieguanyin of the current year and last year's Wuyi rock tea.

Black tea and ripe Pu'er in winter:

Drinking black tea in winter can nourish yang energy and give people a warm feeling; ripe Pu'er can warm the stomach, dispel cold, and promote digestion.

 4. What tea is most suitable for men and women?

Drink tea according to the person.

 Tea suitable for the elderly:

Zhao Yingli said that many elderly people worry that drinking tea will lead to calcium deficiency. In fact, as long as they don't drink too much or too strong tea and appropriately drink more milk and eat some tofu, the lost calcium can be fully replenished. As they get older, they can drink more black tea.

Tea suitable for children:

Children can also drink some light tea appropriately, which is beneficial for growth and development.

 Tea suitable for men:

Men are suitable for drinking green tea, raw Pu'er that has been stored for more than three years, and oolong tea, especially Wuyi rock tea, which is called “men's tea.”

Tea suitable for women:

Women can drink some good green tea appropriately, which has beauty and skin care effects. However, during menstruation and pregnancy, the amount of tea should be controlled. During menopause, they can drink more flower tea and Dancong.

 5. Wrong drinking methods damage nutrition

Speaking of the biggest “mistake” in modern tea drinking, Zhao Yingli reminded that using a large teacup with a handful of tea leaves steeped all day is the most inadvisable. This way, you cannot taste the true flavor of the tea, and long-term steeping can easily cause heavy metals in the tea to leach out, which is harmful to health.

“When drinking tea, you must separate the tea from the water. Even if you don't have professional tea utensils, you can prepare a teapot or teacup with a filter.”

In addition, “not washing new tea, not throwing away leftover tea, and not cleaning tea scale” are also common mistakes people make when drinking tea.

Whether it is tender new tea or precious aged tea, there may be pesticide residues and dust mite contamination on the surface. It is best to “rinse” it, pouring away the first infusion.

Some people are unwilling to wash off the tea scale on the teapot, thinking that this can “nurture” the pot. In fact, tea scale is not only harmful to health but also affects the taste of the tea.
