Now, Have a Cup of Tea for Your Future Elderly Self

Tea News · Jun 09, 2025

If I grow old in the future, I hope to be like tea, to age into a cup of tea.

Holding a cup of tea, the clear and bright color of the tea is familiar—it resembles the hue of old photo albums I flip through alone under the lamplight. The albums contain many faces, names long forgotten, only knowing they were once classmates who shared youthful adventures. Like a drop of water merging into the ocean, their whereabouts are unknown, and they may no longer remember me either.

Tea helps reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.

Researchers at the University of Hong Kong found that drinking tea can lower total blood cholesterol levels by 25%. Another study on the relationship between tea consumption and hypertension found that the incidence of high blood pressure was 10.55% among non-tea drinkers, compared to 6.95% among regular tea drinkers, confirming tea's blood pressure-lowering effects.

Tea may reduce the risk of diabetes.

A long-term study tracking 17,000 men and women aged 40–65 found that those who drank more than six cups of green tea daily had a 33% lower risk of diabetes compared to those who drank less than one cup per week. Some studies suggest that cold-brewed green tea may be even more effective in preventing diabetes.

Tea may help prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Tea protects brain cells and slows cognitive decline, promoting vascular health in the brain. Recent studies show that drinking more tea can improve memory and prevent early-onset Alzheimer's.

Tea has stress-relieving and anti-anxiety properties.

Modern life is fast-paced and stressful, often leading to anxiety, tension, irritability, and depression. Green tea contains L-theanine, a non-sedative relaxant that increases gamma waves in the brain, helping to control anxiety, improve focus, and enhance overall mental state. Drinking 3–4 cups of green tea provides 100–200 mg of L-theanine, making it effective for stress and anxiety relief.

Tea boosts immunity.

During flu season, drinking more tea can help. Harvard researchers found that people who drank five cups of tea daily for two weeks produced significantly more antiviral interferon—10 times higher than non-tea drinkers. This infection-fighting protein enhances immunity and helps combat the flu.

Tea enhances antibacterial effects.

In May 2008, Egyptian researchers tested "green tea combined with antibiotics" against 28 types of bacteria. The results showed that green tea significantly boosted antibiotic efficacy, increasing bacterial kill rates by up to three times. It also reduced bacterial resistance.

Tea aids in weight loss for those who are overweight.

Studies found that long-term tea drinkers (10+ years) had 20% lower body fat in men and 30% in women compared to non-tea drinkers. Losing weight while enjoying tea is a delightful bonus! Tea also acts as a natural skincare agent, leaving regular drinkers with radiant skin.

Other health benefits of tea.

Tea also relieves fatigue, sharpens focus, improves vision, aids digestion, detoxifies, prevents tooth decay, and freshens breath. As an alkaline beverage, it helps balance acidic body conditions... Truly, tea is the healthiest drink of the century.
