The Difference Between Golden Flower Pu-erh and Golden Flower Fu Tea

Tea News · Aug 13, 2025

Golden Flower Fu Tea, a distinctive product in the black tea category of the six major tea classes, is a post-fermented and fully fermented tea. Originally a specialty commodity for nomadic regions like the Northwest, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, it is processed during the hottest summer days, hence called 'Fu Tea.' Due to its effects resembling Smilax glabra, it is also known as Fu Tea or Fu Brick Tea. Historically produced under government supervision for official sales, it is also called Official Tea or Government Tea.

Both are classified as 'fermented teas' because the polyphenols in the tea oxidize during fermentation. However, their fermentation methods, conditions, processing techniques, and raw materials differ, leading to distinct results. Golden Flower Fu Tea mainly uses coarse black tea leaves from Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Hunan, often with more stems, while Golden Flower Pu-erh uses finer, higher-grade Pu-erh tea leaves from Yunnan.
