Pu-erh Tea Tasting Techniques

Tea News · Nov 27, 2025

1. Pu-erh tea should be brewed in a pot with a large belly, because Pu-erh tea has a high concentration. Using a pot with a large belly can prevent the tea soup from being too strong. It is recommended to choose a ceramic pot or purple clay pot.

2. Amount of Pu-erh tea for brewing: When brewing Pu-erh, the amount of tea leaves should account for about 20% of the pot. After breaking up the tea brick or tea cake, expose it to air for 2 weeks, and then brew for better flavor.

3. Brewing Pu-erh tea: It is essential to rinse once with hot water. Because good aged Pu-erh tea is stored for at least ten years, it may contain some dust. The first rinse with hot water not only awakens the tea's flavor but also cleans impurities from the leaves. The first rinse should be quick, just to clean the tea leaves, without steeping out the flavor. The strength of subsequent brews can be adjusted according to personal preference. Pu-erh tea remains flavorful even after cooling, so in summer, it can be served cold or chilled.

4. When tasting Pu-erh tea, you must smell the aroma while it is hot. Hold the cup under your nose, and you will feel the aged fragrance rushing forth like a spring. Its elegant and refreshing feeling is no less than that of orchids or chrysanthemums.

5. Pu-erh tea requires mindful tasting. Sip it into your mouth to truly appreciate its charm. Although the tea soup may taste slightly bitter at first, let it linger between your throat and tongue, and you will feel the tea soup penetrating between your teeth and seeping into your gums. A sweet sensation will arise from the root of your tongue and spread across its surface, filling your mouth with fragrance and producing saliva. This refreshing feeling, with continuous salivation that quenches thirst, is the best tasting experience—"returning charm."

6. Can Pu-erh tea be drunk overnight? Theoretically, any tea is the same; drinking it overnight is not harmful to health. However, more tea polyphenols will leach out, making it bitter and less pleasant to drink. In fact, tea left overnight is similar to tea left from morning to evening—both have been steeped for a long time. Theoretically, whether considering the freshness of the tea soup, the taste, health benefits, or hygiene, it is recommended to drink fresh tea. Tea brewed several days ago, being too old, is best not consumed.

7. Why does drinking Pu-erh tea cause bloating? After drinking Pu-erh tea, you may feel somewhat bloated, prone to belching, and even experience signs of constipation. This could be because you are not yet accustomed to drinking it. Wait for a while and see if the condition persists. If it does, then your constitution may not be suitable for Pu-erh tea, and you should try another type of tea.

8. How should Pu-erh tea be drunk for the best effect? Pu-erh tea is best consumed half an hour after a meal. If you eat too little, you should not drink too much Pu-erh, or you might feel weak before losing weight. In fact, with proper meals, Pu-erh tea after meals, and appropriate exercise, the weight loss effect is quite noticeable.
