Can drinking tea really help sober up?

Tea News · Mar 29, 2026

Doctors indicate that drinking tea in moderation after alcohol consumption is beneficial for sobering up, but there are specific considerations when drinking tea after alcohol.

Doctors explain that tea contains over 500 components, including proteins, amino acids, alkaloids, sugars, vitamins, and enzymes, many of which aid in alcohol metabolism. For example, the liver can secrete hydrolytic enzymes present in tea to break down alcohol and detoxify; sugars in tea protect the liver; tea can also dilute alcohol, promote gastrointestinal motility, and reduce alcohol absorption; the caffeine in tea stimulates the brain, enhancing alertness and helping to clear the mind clouded by alcohol, thereby achieving a "sobering" effect.

Drinking tea is beneficial for sobering up, but it should be done with care. Generally, it is best to choose black tea for sobering up, as it contains higher sugar content. Additionally, the tea should not be too strong, as excessive caffeine may increase heart rate and add burden to the heart.
