Both a Beverage and a Medicine: Exploring the Lesser-Known Marvelous Uses of Anxi Tieguanyin

Tea News · Apr 18, 2026

In recent years, as the fame of Anxi Tieguanyin has spread, more and more people have started drinking it. While many have enjoyed Tieguanyin, most are unaware of its other remarkable uses beyond being a top-quality tea beverage. Recently, while tasting Anxi Tieguanyin with several seasoned tea enthusiasts, one friend mentioned that besides its excellent flavor, Tieguanyin has many lesser-known applications. Notably, it is not just a drink but also served as an effective remedy in earlier times when medicines were scarce. Intrigued, I asked for details and took notes, which I have compiled below to share with everyone.

1. Treating Poor Diet, Stomach Bloating, and Diarrhea

Method: Stir-fry an appropriate amount of salt in a pan, add 15-20 grams of Tieguanyin tea leaves, and fry until the salt turns black. Then brew with boiling water and drink the tea. This is highly effective for poor digestion, stomach acid buildup, diarrhea, and bloating caused by dietary issues.

2. Treating Gastroenteritis and Dysentery

Cut a bitter gourd in half, remove the pulp, and fill it with Tieguanyin tea leaves. Tie it tightly with string and dry it in the sun. Store in a dry place for later use. When needed, slice it, add a little salt, and brew with boiling water to drink the liquid. This can treat gastroenteritis, dysentery, and indigestion.

3. Reducing Internal Heat, Boosting Appetite, and Treating Gastroenteritis

Take a pomelo, cut off a lid, remove the flesh inside, and fill it with Tieguanyin tea leaves. Replace the lid and sew it back together with thread. Dry it in an oven or hang it in a ventilated place. When using, slice it, add a little salt, and brew with boiling water to drink the liquid. This can reduce internal heat, boost appetite, and treat gastroenteritis and indigestion.

4. Treating Colds

Stir-fry Tieguanyin tea leaves with an appropriate amount of ginger in a pan, then brew with boiling water and drink the tea to effectively treat colds.

5. Treating Heatstroke, Lowering Blood Pressure, and Improving Blood Circulation

Stir-fry well-preserved Tieguanyin aged tea (over ten years old) with winter honey in a pan, then brew with boiling water and drink. This effectively treats heatstroke and has the benefits of lowering blood pressure and improving blood circulation.

6. Treating Burn and Scald Wounds

Boil Tieguanyin tea leaves to make a concentrated liquid. After cooling, apply it to the wound or scalded area four to five times a day. The wound will heal quickly.

7. Tieguanyin + Soy Sauce for Motion Sickness

If you are prone to motion sickness, it's best to bring a cup of Tieguanyin tea before getting on a vehicle. When feeling unwell, add 2-3 milliliters of soy sauce and drink it. This can relieve motion sickness or seasickness and also helps sober up from alcohol.

8. Treating Gum Bleeding

Regularly brushing teeth with Tieguanyin tea water can prevent oral conditions like gum bleeding.

9. Tieguanyin Tea Bath for Treating Skin Diseases

Place 20-30 grams of Tieguanyin tea leaves in a small cloth bag and put it in the bathtub for a soak. This can treat skin diseases, remove dead skin cells, smooth the skin, and eliminate body odor. For infants with inflamed or reddened skin, bathing them in water boiled with Tieguanyin (at a suitable temperature) can reduce inflammation and redness.
