Pu-erh Tea: One Year for Tea, Three Years for Medicine, Seven Years for Treasure

Tea News · Sep 01, 2025

 China has a long history of "using tea to treat diseases." Ancient records frequently mention using aged Pu-erh tea to treat diabetes, dysentery, colds, and more. Research on Pu-erh tea's functions has proven that Yunnan Pu-erh tea has at least nine major health preservation benefits: supplementing dietary nutrition; aiding digestion, reducing greasiness, and smoothing the stomach; reducing lipids, losing weight, softening blood vessels, and preventing cardiovascular diseases; anti-oxidation, delaying aging, and prolonging life; anti-cancer and anti-mutation; improving sugar metabolism, lowering blood sugar, and preventing diabetes; sterilizing and reducing inflammation; diuretic detoxification and reducing the harm of tobacco and alcohol.

In those days lacking medical care and medicine, Yunnan Pu-erh tea was regarded as a treasure by the people. It could be used to treat children's measles, sore throats, colds and fevers, stomach discomfort,水土不服 (adjusting to a new environment), and other ailments, with immediate effects that made people amazed by its miraculous properties.

At the same time, Yunnan Pu-erh tea is deeply loved by women because of its fresh and elegant taste, mild nature, and its effects on beauty and anti-wrinkle, reducing lipids and weight, and clearing heat and detoxifying. It is a necessity for beauty-loving women.

Professor Liu Zhonghua from Hunan Agricultural University revealed the efficacy of Pu-erh tea. From February 2011 to June 2012, the National Engineering Research Center for the Utilization of Botanical Functional Ingredients, the Modernization Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine at Tsinghua University, the Aging Medicine Research Center at Peking University, the Key Laboratory of Tea Science of the Ministry of Education, and the Sub-health Intervention Technology Laboratory of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine used Yunnan Pu-erh tea as the research object. They explored the health functions and scientific mechanisms of Yunnan Pu-erh tea at the levels of chemical substance groupomics, cell biology, and molecular biology. The experiments discovered many effects of Yunnan Pu-erh tea.

1. Pu-erh tea has significant beauty and anti-aging effects;

2. Pu-erh tea can prevent skin cell photoaging;

3. Pu-erh tea has a significant lipid-lowering effect;

4. Pu-erh tea has a obvious blood sugar lowering effect;

5. Pu-erh tea can effectively repair alcoholic liver damage caused by excessive drinking;

6. Pu-erh tea has significant anti-inflammatory effects;

7. Pu-erh tea can effectively balance intestinal microflora, thereby regulating the stomach and intestines;

8. Aged Pu-erh tea has unique performance in health benefits compared to new Pu-erh tea.

Collecting Pu-erh tea means enjoying health. Pu-erh tea is convenient to store; it can be preserved for a long time as long as it is kept dry, away from light, and free of foreign odors. Its taste will change over time. There is a folk saying about Pu-erh tea: "One year for tea, three years for medicine, seven years for treasure," meaning that the older the Yunnan Pu-erh tea, the higher its medicinal value.

Tea drinkers and tea collectors are both tea lovers. Compared to drinkers, collectors are more meticulous and subjective because the tea they brew is stored by themselves. For Yunnan Pu-erh tea, the older it is, the better the taste, and those unique items with historical value are even more precious than gold. Meanwhile, tea products with unique shapes placed in the hall have artistic ornamental value, reflecting the owner's cultural taste.

Storage methods for Pu-erh tea products:

Yunnan Pu-erh tea is the most special category among the six major tea types. It coexists with the sun and moon and lives in harmony with the environment. Other tea types fear oxidation and moisture, but Yunnan Pu-erh tea's quality continuously sublimates under natural environmental conditions. Keep it in a shady place and avoid sun exposure, as sunlight will rapidly oxidize the tea, producing a sun-exposed taste that is difficult to eliminate for a long time. Ventilation is important, avoid airtight sealing. Ventilation helps the natural oxidation of the tea. Never use plastic bags for sealing. You can use breathable packaging materials like kraft paper or hide paper for packaging and storage.
