How to Identify Whether Biluochun Has Been Artificially 'Colored'?

Tea News · Oct 05, 2025

Biluochun, with its abundant buds, delicate aroma, clear liquor, and mellow taste, is one of China's top ten famous teas and belongs to the green tea category. Some friends hold a misconception when purchasing green tea: the greener the tea, the better. Experts remind us that color follows the natural patterns of plant growth, and a greener color does not necessarily indicate better tea quality. When distinguishing between genuine and fake Biluochun, consumers should pay attention to the following points:

1. Observe the appearance and color: Biluochun without added pigments has a relatively soft and natural color, while artificially colored Biluochun appears bright green and has a noticeable dyed look.

2. Observe the color of the tea liquor: After brewing Biluochun with boiling water, the liquor without added pigments looks relatively clear, soft, and bright yellowish-green, while the liquor with added pigments appears more vibrant and distinctly green.

Experts add that if Biluochun has been colored, its downy hairs are mostly green, resulting from being dyed green. Authentic Biluochun should be covered with white fuzz, having small white hairs. When buying tea, don't blindly demand greenness as an indicator of quality. Natural tea leaves will inevitably lose some chlorophyll during the wok-firing process.
