The Shape Characteristics of Huangshan Maofeng Tea

Tea News · Oct 19, 2025

Huangshan Maofeng tea leaves are one of China's top ten famous teas, highly popular, but many friends do not know what the shape characteristics of Huangshan Maofeng are like? Some people can identify what kind of tea it is and its price just by looking at the shape of the leaves. So, what are the shape characteristics of Huangshan Maofeng tea leaves? Huangshan Maofeng has slender, slightly curled leaves, with plump, even buds, and sharp pekoe, somewhat resembling "sparrow tongues." The leaves are golden-yellow in color: tender green with an oily sheen, and a fresh aroma. The liquor is clear, apricot-yellow, and bright, with a mellow, thick, and sweet aftertaste. The brewed leaves form whole buds and leaves, thick and vibrant. Counterfeit tea appears earthy yellow, tastes bitter, and the brewed leaves do not form whole pieces. The distinct shape of Huangshan Maofeng is due to a certain material basis.

The Shape Characteristics of Huangshan Maofeng Tea

Premium grade Huangshan Maofeng is considered the pinnacle of China's Maofeng teas. Huangshan Maofeng has a beautiful appearance, each leaf about half an inch long, green with a slight hint of yellow, oily and bright in sheen. The sharp buds are nestled close to the leaves, very much like sparrow tongues. The whole leaf is covered with fine white pekoe, even and sturdy, with the bud tip and pekoe clearly visible, the color resembling ivory, and the fish leaf (a small protective leaf) golden yellow. The aroma is fresh and high, the liquor is clear, the taste is fresh, strong, mellow, and sweet, and the brewed leaves are tender yellow, plump, and form whole pieces. Among these, the "golden flakes" and "ivory color" are two distinct shape characteristics that differentiate premium Huangshan Maofeng from other Maofeng teas. The strips of Huangshan Maofeng are thin and flat, green with a slight hint of yellow, and the color should be oily and bright. The sharp buds are nestled close to the leaves, shaped like sparrow tongues, and come with a golden yellow fish leaf, also known as "leaf shoot" or "golden flake," which is a characteristic that distinguishes it from other Maofeng teas. The leaf buds of Huangshan Maofeng are plump, evenly shaped, with white pekoe apparent, and a color similar to ivory. Huangshan Maofeng is produced in Huangshan, Anhui Province. It was created by the Xie Yutai Tea Shop during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. Every year during the Qingming and Guyu seasons, newly sprouted, plump, tender buds are selected and hand-fried. This tea has slightly curled leaves, shaped like sparrow tongues, green with a hint of yellow, with silvery pekoe apparent, and accompanied by golden yellow fish leaves (commonly known as golden flakes). The shape of Huangshan Maofeng contributes to its brewing characteristics: when brewed in a cup, mist gathers at the top (a phenomenon where steam condenses), the liquor is clear, bluish with a slight yellow tint, the brewed leaves are yellow-green and lively, the taste is mellow and sweet, the aroma is orchid-like, and the aftertaste is long and profound.
