Methods for Preserving Tea

Tea News · Nov 02, 2025

1. The preservation of tea remains a major challenge in the world today. There is no method that can keep tea leaves fresh for a long time; we can only try to extend their保鲜期. The key to preserving tea is to prevent pressure, moisture, ensure密封, avoid light, and protect against odors.

2. The best containers for storing tea are tin bottles, porcelain jars, and colored glass bottles. The next best options are iron tins, wooden boxes, and bamboo boxes, though bamboo boxes are not suitable for use in dry northern regions. Plastic bags and cardboard boxes are the least ideal. Tea storage containers must be dry, clean, and free of odors.

3. Tea stored in containers should be placed in a dry, ventilated area. It should not be stored in damp, high-temperature, dirty, or directly sun-exposed locations. The storage area should not contain items with strong odors such as camphor, medicine, cosmetics, cigarettes, or cleaning products. Additionally, different types and grades of tea should not be stored together.

4. Nowadays, tea shops commonly have vacuum machines. After purchasing tea, you can ask the shop to vacuum-seal it for you. Once you bring it home and store it in the refrigerator, as long as it remains unopened, the tea can retain its original flavor for up to a year or more. However, it's important to note that once opened, you must be careful to protect it from odors, as tea easily absorbs them. Don't let your tea become the refrigerator's "deodorizer."
