Four Common Misconceptions About Pu-erh Tea

Tea News · Nov 25, 2025

Pu-erh Tea is loved by many for its reddish appearance, bright liquor, unique aroma, and mellow taste. But have you fallen into any misconceptions about Pu-erh tea?

Misconception 1: The Older, The Better

Don't simply assume that all Pu-erh tea gets better with age. In fact, Pu-erh tea only improves in quality if it is of good initial quality, stored under correct conditions, and within a certain time frame. However, if the quality is subpar or the storage conditions are inappropriate, the tea will not improve with age.

Misconception 2: Repeatedly Boiling Water to Maintain Temperature

Generally, water temperature for brewing Pu-erh tea should be kept above 90°C (194°F) to enhance its aroma and taste. Therefore, many people prefer to repeatedly boil the water used for brewing Pu-erh, with some even keeping it boiling continuously. This is actually not a good practice. Repeatedly boiling water causes a large amount of salts to precipitate. The more times the water is boiled, the more trace metals and other substances are produced, which can affect the taste of Pu-erh and may even be detrimental to human health.

Misconception 3: Tea Can Replace Water

Although Pu-erh tea has health benefits, it should not be used as a substitute for drinking water. This is because tea liquor contains other substances in larger quantities. If consumed in excess, these substances may not be absorbed by the body and can instead produce side effects.

Misconception 4: Drinking Only Pu-erh Tea

Some tea enthusiasts love Pu-erh so much that they keep it at home and drink it daily, year after year. However, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, different teas have different health benefits. It is better for one's health to choose different teas according to the different seasons.

Therefore, when drinking Pu-erh tea, you should pay more attention to the misconceptions mentioned above.
