Chewing Tea Leaves Strengthens Teeth and Benefits Health

Tea News · Nov 11, 2025

A folk proverb says "Drink tea regularly, have fewer rotten teeth," indicating tea's dental healthcare effects. As known, fluoride protects teeth, and tea leaves contain abundant fluoride that strengthens tooth enamel and prevents excessive acid formation in the mouth. Research shows just 1 liter of black tea provides about 2mg fluoride—half an adult's daily requirement.

Dental studies found oolong tea and green tea contain the highest fluoride among varieties, with newly picked leaves having higher concentrations; lower-grade teas exceed high-grade ones; coarse leaves surpass buds and young leaves. Tea also contains polyphenols preventing cavity formation. It eliminates oral odor as tea's pectin reacts with saliva to enhance oral antibacterial capacity.

Avoid overly strong or excessive tea consumption, preferably drinking in mornings. Non-tea-drinkers can chew tea leaves for similar dental benefits.
