Does drinking tea cause insomnia? Is this really true?

We all know that drinking tea can lead to insomnia, but some people disagree, arguing that Pu-erh tea does not cause insomnia. Is this really the case?

Experts point out that although Pu-erh tea has health benefits, improper consumption can still lead to insomnia. In other words, to avoid insomnia caused by Pu-erh tea, we should learn to drink it appropriately.

Experts explain that Pu-erh tea is divided into raw tea and ripe tea. Raw tea contains high levels of tea polyphenols, which are more likely to cause insomnia after consumption. Ripe tea, on the other hand, undergoes pile fermentation and ripening, during which the tea polyphenols are transformed, making it less likely to cause insomnia. In other words, to avoid insomnia, we can choose to drink ripe tea.

Additionally, proper brewing can maximize the health benefits of Pu-erh tea while reducing the risk of insomnia. Although some say that boiling Pu-erh tea brings out its flavor, Weng Kun, Deputy Researcher of the National Tea Quality Supervision and Inspection Center and Secretary-General of the National Tea Standardization Technical Committee, clearly states: "Pu-erh tea is better brewed than boiled." Boiling can easily make the tea too concentrated, not only increasing the risk of nighttime insomnia but also potentially harming the spleen and stomach. When brewing, it is advisable to use a teapot with a large belly, as Pu-erh tea is highly concentrated, and a large teapot can prevent the tea from becoming too strong. As for the amount of tea leaves, they should occupy about 20% of the teapot's volume.
