How to Drink Tea Scientifically and Reasonably: Choose Different Teas for Different Seasons

Tea News · Jun 14, 2026

Tea has different properties, people have different conditions, and different seasons and environmental conditions also affect the relationship between people and tea. Therefore, drinking tea scientifically and reasonably needs to vary according to the person, time, place, and tea.

Understand the cooling and warming properties of tea. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the medicinal nature of tea is generally slightly cold, leaning towards neutral or cool. However, relatively speaking, black tea is warmer in nature and causes less irritation to the stomach; green tea is cooler in nature and causes more irritation to the stomach. In terms of production time, freshly fried new tea, whether green or black, is relatively hot, and drinking too much can easily cause上火 (internal heat). But this heat nature only lasts for a short time and generally disappears after a few weeks of storage. On the contrary, aged tea tends to be cooler; generally, the older the tea, the cooler it becomes.

Choose different teas for different seasons. Climate and seasons are important factors influencing people's lifestyles. Tea drinking should be based on the climate changes of the four seasons to select teas with different properties. In the hot summer, it is suitable to drink green tea, because green tea is cool in nature. Drinking a cup of refreshing green tea can dispel the summer heat, relieve heat, and quench thirst. In winter, when the weather is cold, drinking a cup of warm black tea or a more heavily fermented oolong tea can give a feeling of generating heat and warming the stomach. Therefore, in China, there is a saying: "Drink Longjing in summer, drink oolong in winter." In spring, as the severe winter subsides, the climate warms up, but there is more rain and higher humidity. At this time, drinking a cup of fragrant jasmine tea can both dispel the lingering cold and help regulate the liver qi, promoting the rise of yang energy in the human body. Arranging tea drinking in this way according to the four seasons can significantly enhance the health benefits of tea.

Choose different teas for different body constitutions. People's body constitutions vary, and their requirements for tea also differ. Therefore, tea selection should vary from person to person. Generally speaking, for those who are drinking tea for the first time, drink tea occasionally, or prefer a light tea taste, it is best to choose high-grade famous green teas, such as West Lake Longjing or Huangshan Maofeng. For those who usually prefer a strong and mellow tea taste, it is better to choose pan-fired green teas such as Zhen Mei or Pearl Tea. Those who usually feel chilly should choose black tea or Pu'er tea. Those who usually feel hot should choose green tea. Since green tea contains more tea polyphenols, it can have a certain irritating effect on the stomach. Therefore, if drinking green tea causes stomach discomfort, one can switch to black tea.
